Detachment
13,
Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington (AWA
Members SSgt Mark A. Bauman and
TSgt Daniel A. Ristau) Mark A.
Bauman, Daniel Ristau,Brenden Kelley, and
Rodney Wood, challenged the local news
station sports director Mark Holyoak and
crew, KLAX-2 TV, to a wallyball game.
We played 3 games against the news crew,
which resulted in the Detachment winning
15-3, 15-5, and 15-4. We also
participated in a local wallyball
tournament here at Fairchild AFB.
It was a best 2 out of 3 tournament.
We submitted two teams for this
tournament. In the first round both
of our teams received byes. In the
second round a team consisting of myself,
Dan Ristau, Brenden Kelley, and Terrance
Wren proceeded to obliterate the
opposition by scores of 15-0 and
15-1. In the finals we met our other
team. We once again proceeded to
prove our dominance over the local teams
as we beat our team 2 by scores of 15-4
and 15-6.

The
net I purchased from you along with the
balls I received from the AWA were used
during our games on February 10th.
I can assure you that this equipment
will see more use in the months to come.
I would like to also mention that many
people at the racquet club
made many compliments about our
equipment. One person actually
said we looked like a professional
operation with the AWA official balls
and net.

Wallyball
Attract young Volleyball player:
a
volleyball camp for a week. So one day
at the camp we did drills in racquetball
courts. We also played wallyball (but
without a net). So that's when i first
heard about the sport. Since we were all
beginners, we had a lot of fun using the
walls (because most of us had bad aim)
and I really enjoyed it.
Later on I wanted to see if there were
any wallyball websites, so I went to
www.wallyball.com. I was surprised that
this was actually a real sport and many
people around the world play it. I
sometimes joked around with my
volleyball team that I played
professional wallyball and I knew the
rules. But after looking at the AWA
website I got more interested in
wallyball and wanted to buy a wallyball
and the rulebook. And even if I don't
play wallyball often, I can still play
volleyball with the wallyball I bought.
I was almost going to buy a less
expensive wallyball from a different
company, but I thought that the AWA had
better wallyballs.

Jim
Coleman |
The
American Wallyball Association was deeply saddened to
learn of the death of Jim Coleman. Dr. James Eugene
Coleman (69) of San Diego, California a great wallyball
player passed away last August at St. Mary’s Hospital
in Duluth, Minnesota. He was admitted to the hospital in
Duluth for over two weeks from his summer cabin in Ely,
Minnesota and was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis
(inflammation of the pancreas). Coleman, who has worked
with USA Volleyball and their National Teams for over 40
years, was most recently serving as the Team Leader for
the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team, having
accompanied them during their World League events in May
and June.
“Not only The American Wallyball Association, but the
entire sports of Wallyball and volleyball has lost an
absolutely irreplaceable human being and resource,”
said Doug Beal, USA Men’s National Team Head Coach.
“Jim Coleman meant more to me personally than anyone I
have ever encountered in sport. He represented
everything positive; and motivated and guided so many
people and so much that was good and joyous in our
world. His dedication, his commitment, his willingness
to work, his ability to span almost every facet of our
game was unparalleled. I can’t think of any coach that
hasn’t been touched by Jim Coleman. I seriously doubt
that we will ever see anyone again who will combine
Jim’s technical knowledge, his inquisitiveness, his
personality and enthusiastic energy. His contributions
are timeless and that is probably the most redeeming
emotion that I can feel at this moment; and the
privilege it was to know and work with this dear
friend.”

Cobra
Shot!
Q).
What
is a cobra shot and what is a dink. I am
6’0” tall and often am set the ball at the
net and slap it down on the other side. If the
hand is cupped (cobra shot?) is it legal? I am
not tall enough to fist it down. The hardcore
players at our gym give me hell because of this
shot and say that only a closed handspike is
allowed.

A).
A
Dink- Usually
a one hand
hit in which the tips of the fingers are
used to hit the ball to an area of the
opponent’s court.
Cobra Shot- One hand hit in which the close tips
of the fingers are used to hit the ball.
Both
shots
are legal.
Open
Hand Serves:
Q).
There
are 6 of us that get together every Wednesday
night at the local YMCA and play wallyball. We
currently have 2 guys who both hit with an open
hand on the serve. One gets a little to moderate
spin on the ball and the other does not get any.
We have considered the one who spins the ball as
illegal, but he feels that since both players
hit open handed, they are the same shot. Which
shots are illegal? Is any type of an open hand
shot allowed on a serve? How much spin is
allowed on a serve?
A.)
The
player in the back position of the court shall
put the ball in play by hitting it with one hand
only or any part of the player’s arm in an
attempt to send the
ball over the net and into
and
into the
opponent’s court.
The serve is good if the ball passes over
the net without touching a member of the serving
team or the net.
A served ball that hits a wall on either
the serving team’s side or the receiving side
is good provided the ball contacted does not
contact two or more consecutive walls before
being played or landing on the floor.
This
Shot is Illegal...
